The Usefulness of Pointless Acts

These performance scores evolved from my earlier project The Fairies of Weimar, an interactive game created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus. That project used the language of games to explore movement, choice, space, and participation. The scores extend those ideas into a form that exists somewhere between a game, a drawing, and a set of instructions for performance.

Drawing on Fluxus event scores and early forms of performance notation, each work proposes a loose system of actions, objects, intervals, and relations rather than a fixed choreography. The graphic language also carries forward my interest in the Bauhaus, using geometric forms, typography, color, balance, and spatial organization as active elements within the score.

Like a game, each score establishes a set of conditions while leaving room for interpretation, improvisation, and uncertainty. The work is less concerned with producing a predetermined performance than with creating a structure in which unexpected relationships can emerge.
